True enough.
Leaving private practice and indulging myself now in the government service - which will attract questions and reactions such as "Oh wow, it must be good for you that you can go back at 5 everyday!" or "Mesti relax kannn" or "Banyak kerja tak?" or "Government servant pemalas. Selalu kalau call government office tak angkat" and whatnots.
Well, some are true whilst some are not.
Balik pukul 5 - Yes. Some of us or most of us are practicing it. You see, there is not even a bit of an issue here. You punch in at 8 in the morning, have breakfast and whatnots (this, depending on yourself whether to finish a plate of nasi lemak in 1 hour, 1/2 hour or just in 10-15 minutes, termasuk nak tunggu air teh tarik sejuk sikit). Then you begin the work marathon until lunch time, makan, then sambung balik buat kerja.
By 5pm, if you can manage to complete your work (excluding those that are spanning, which can't be completed on that day) and if there's no last minute call for a meeting, balik la. Nak buat apa lagi. Takkan nak duduk buat rajin lap habuk kat cubicle sebelah ke kan. Correct?
Banyak kerja - Sama je dengan private practice. Cuma nature of work beza la. Kalau kat firm sebok pegi court balik court prepare submission and whatnots (I was in the conveyancing department and heck, I didn't go to court and neither did I ever appear before any judge. Boo!). Kat Chambers tengok la awak duduk division mana. Kalau Drafting macam saya, nama pun drafting, perap dalam office jela. Unless if I have meetings outside with the respective ministries. Kalau division lain, lain la kerjanya. Hujung-hujung sama je banyak jugak kerja.
Biasa la kerja, memang la banyak. Kerja jadi janitor pun banyak kerja nak kemas ni bersihkan tu apa semua basuh toilet lagi kan.
Kerja kat Bintang Fashion pun banyak kerja nak kira stock lagi nak susun baju lagi nak tutup kedai lagi. Sama je.
Relax - Refer above.
Call tak angkat - Haaa ni partially betul la jugak. Sometimes within this Jabatan pun ada je yang tak angkat call.
Satu spoilt, kita marah semua. Yang cekap tu cekap je, tak merewang. Tapi yang merewang ni time buat kerja, buat jugak. Biasa la sesetengah masa nak unwind sikit.

It's been quite some time since I first joined Chambers. Belum rasa lagi pahit yang bebetul pahit, manis yang lagi manis dari madu kononnya. Belum rasa lagi. Bakal rasa, nanti.
Orang kata "Be prepared for the worst". Tapi macam negative sangat la pulak nak sentiasa be prepared for the worst. Macam, sentiasa bawak payung dalam keadaan panas terik macam nak kemarau. Bagus, tapi macam over pulak.
So far, I went back at 5pm or later, but I have not stayed back later than 6pm (as far as I can remember). Because it feels so good to be back home while the sky is still bright, while the sun have not set, while I can capture the sun shining and Instagram it, while the pasar malam is still open, while I can still catch the drama airing at 7pm on every Mondays-Thursdays, etc.
It feels way better than the previous one, so far, Alhamdulillah.

And an Ustazah once said, kalau nak cari kerja, kalau boleh, kalau boleh la, cari yang dekat dengan rumah.
Because you will commit less sin, then. Why? Because en route to work, the traffic WON'T be nice to any of us, admit that. And other drivers won't help to make our mornings and the rest of the day any better either. And we'll then start cursing here and there, give that deadly stares to those old sleepy uncles driving an old wagon but persistently stay on the right lane etc, and that, according the Ustazah, will lessen the blessings we ought to get for that day.
Working is an ibadah. We should pray that God bless our job, bless our journey to and fro the office, bless our salary, and everything related to it. Because whatever we earn, however we earn it, make sure it is halal, and blessed. Otherwise... Long story cut short, it might lead to all sorts of mishaps that can happen to us.

Work to live or live to work?
Your call. :)
Wallahu'alam.
